.01 Required Continuing Education Hours.
A. By October of each renewal year, beginning in October, 2004, license and registration holders shall satisfactorily complete a minimum of 24 hours within the previous 24 months as follows:
(1) 3 hours in professional ethics or jurisprudence;
(2) 3 hours in communicable disease education which includes AIDS/HIV; and
(3) 17 hours in massage-related courses as approved by the Board; and
(4) 1 hour in diversity or cultural competency .
B. In addition to the requirements of §A of this regulation, at the time of renewal, a license or a registration holder shall possess a certification of qualification in CPR.
.02 Approval of Continuing Education Programs.
A. The Board shall:
(1) Base approval of continuing education programs solely on content;
(2) Ensure that continuing education programs are directed toward improvement, advancement, and extension of professional skill and knowledge related to massage therapy.
B. A course or program offered by a pre-approved provider is approved without further review and is exempted from the requirements of Regulation .04 this chapter, provided that the course or program pertains to the human anatomy and includes any of the following topics:
(1) Massage practice modalities, application, scope, and philosophy;
(2) Contraindications;
(3) Massage therapy theory, technique, studies, and research;
(4) Professional ethics, jurisprudence, and risk management;
(5) Recordkeeping and professional business practices;
(6) Diversity, communications, and cultural competency; and
(7) Any other topic determined by the Board to meet the professional and educational requirements of the license and registration holders.
C. Pre-approved Providers. Unless the requirement of §B of this regulation are not met or accreditation status of the pre-approved provider, including all sub-providers, schools, courses, and programs approved or sanctioned by the pre-approved provider unless otherwise prohibited, is not retained, the following shall be considered pre-approved providers:
(1) COMTA;
(2) FSMTB;
(3) NCCAOM;
(4) NCBTMB;
(5) AOBTA;
(6) AMTA;
(7) National and State massage therapy organizations accredited by the federal or state government or a Board recognized accreditation society;
(8) Accredited state schools and U.S. Military Commands; and
(9) Such other Board-approved providers.
D. Up to 12 credit hours may be achieved for formal, authorized representation at a national, regional, or local convention or meeting relating to any of the above-cited organizations.
E. Courses may be completed in live, home study, or online format.

Continuing Education (CE) Requirement:
➢During the 2 years preceding the application for renewal, successful completion of 18 continuing education contact hours that are approved by the board.
➢Minimum of 1 hour of continuing education earned in the area of pain and symptom management.
➢Minimum of 1 hour of continuing education earned in the area of professional ethics and boundries.

Rule R 338.739 An applicant for license renewal who has been licensed for the 3-year period immediately preceding the expiration date of the license shall accumulate not less than 18 hours of continuing education in activities approved by the board during the 3 years immediately preceding the application for renewal. At least 1 hour of CE shall be earned in the area of pain and symptom management and at least 2 hours of CE shall be earned in the area of professional ethics and boundaries. Licensees renewed in 2018 must complete continuing education by renewal in 2021; renewals for 2019 by renewal in 2022, etc

PART 4. CONTINUING EDUCATION R 338.741 Acceptable continuing education; requirements; limitations.
Rule 41. (1) The 18 hours of continuing education required pursuant to R 338.739
(2) for the renewal of a massage therapy license shall comply with the following:
(a) Not more than 12 hours of continuing education shall be earned during a 24-hour period. (b) A licensee shall not earn credit for a continuing education program or activity that is identical or substantially identical to a program or activity the licensee has already earned credit for during that renewal period.
(c) A licensee shall not earn credit for continuing education programs or activities that primarily focus on practices excluded from licensure under section 17957 of the code, MCL 333.17957. (d) Pursuant to section 16204 of the code, MCL 333.16204, at least 1 hour of continuing education shall be earned in the area of pain and symptom management. Continuing education hours in pain and symptom management may include, but are not limited to, courses in behavior management, behavior modification, stress management, and clinical applications, as they relate to professional practice.
(e) At least 2 hours of continuing education shall be earned in the area of professional ethics or boundaries.
(2) The board shall consider any of the following as acceptable continuing education: ACCEPTABLE CONTINUING EDUCATION ACTIVITIES

If audited, the licensee shall submit a copy of the presentation notice or advertisement showing the date of the presentation, the licensee’s name listed as a presenter, and the name of the organization that approved or offered the presentation for continuing education credit. Two hours of continuing education shall be granted for each 50 to 60 minutes of presentation. No additional credit shall be granted for preparation of a presentation. A maximum of 6 hours of continuing education may be earned for this activity in each renewal period. Pursuant to R 338.741(1)(c), credit for a presentation shall be granted once per renewal period. 3 Initial presentation of a scientific exhibit, poster, scientific paper, or clinical demonstration to a massage therapy organization. To receive credit, the presentation shall not be part of the licensee’s regular job description or performed in the normal course of the licensee’s employment. Two hours of continuing education shall be granted for each 50 to 60 minutes of presentation. No additional credit shall be granted for preparation of a presentation. If audited, the licensee shall submit a copy of the publication that identifies the licensee as the author or a publication acceptance letter. One hour of continuing education shall be granted for each article. A maximum of 6 hours of continuing education may be earned for this activity in each renewal period. Pursuant to R 338.741(1)(c), credit for publication shall be granted once per renewal period. 5 Initial publication of a chapter related to the practice of massage therapy in either of the following: A professional or health care textbook. A peer-reviewed textbook. If audited, the licensee shall submit a copy of the publication that identifies the licensee as the author or a publication acceptance letter. Five hours of continuing education shall be granted for serving as the primary author. Two hours of continuing education shall be granted for serving as the secondary author. Pursuant to R 338.741(1)(c), credit for publication shall be granted once per renewal period. 6 Identifying, researching, and resolving an event or issue related to clinical or professional practice. If audited, the licensee shall submit a completed experiential activity form approved provided by the department for each issue or event. One hour of continuing education shall be granted for each 50 to 60 minutes spent identifying, researching, and resolving the issue or event. A maximum of 10 hours of continuing education may be earned for this activity in each renewal period. 7 Participating on a state or national committee, board, Five hours of Page 12 Courtesy of www.michigan.gov/orr council, or association related to the field of massage therapy. A committee, board, council, or association is considered acceptable by the board if it enhances the participant’s knowledge and understanding of the field of massage therapy. If audited, the licensee shall submit documentation verifying the licensee’s participation in at least 50% of the regularly scheduled meetings of the committee, board, council, or association. continuing education shall be granted for each committee, board, council, or association. A maximum of 10 hours of continuing education may be earned for this activity in each renewal period. 8 Participating on any of the following: A peer review committee dealing with quality patient care as it relates to the practice of massage therapy. A committee dealing with utilization review as it relates to the practice of massage therapy. A health care organization committee dealing with patient care issues related to the practice of massage therapy. If audited, the licensee shall submit a letter from an organization official verifying the licensee’s participation on the committee. Five hours of continuing education shall be granted for participating on a committee. A maximum of 10 hours of continuing education may be earned for this activity in each renewal period. 9 Providing clinical supervision for students at a supervised student clinic as set forth in R 338.701(i). To receive credit, this activity shall not be part of the licensee’s regular job description. If audited, the licensee shall submit a letter from an authorized official at the agency employing the licensee verifying the licensee’s role and the number of supervision hours the licensee provided. One hour of continuing education shall be granted for each 50 to 60 minutes of supervision provided. A maximum of 4 hours of continuing education may be earned for this activity in each renewal period. 10 Participating in peer supervision or consultation with professional colleagues. If audited, the licensee shall submit an affidavit from the colleague that was involved in the peer supervision or consultation. The affidavit shall attest to the licensee’s role and the number of hours the licensee spent participating in these activities. One hour of continuing education shall be granted for each 50 to 60 minutes of participation. A maximum of 6 hours of continuing education may be earned for this activity in each renewal period. 11 Participating in case conferences, including multidisciplinary conferences, for training purposes. Supervision provided as part of a disciplinary sanction may be included under this activity. If audited, the licensee shall submit an affidavit from the student who received the supervision. The affidavit shall attest to the licensee’s role as a supervisor and the number of hours the licensee spent providing supervision to the student. One hour of continuing education shall be granted for each 50 to 60 minutes of supervision provided beyond the hours of supervision required per month. A maximum of 6 hours of continuing education may be earned for this activity in each renewal period. 13 Participation in a panel discussion relevant to the practice of massage therapy in an approved continuing education program or an organized health care setting. If audited, the licensee shall submit documentation from the organizer of the panel discussion verifying the topic of the panel discussion and the number of hours the licensee spent participating in the discussion. One hour of continuing education shall be granted for each 50 to 60 minutes spent participating in the panel discussion. A maximum of 4 hours of continuing education may be earned for this activity in each renewal period. 14 Maintenance of a current cardiopulmonary resuscitation (cpr) card. If audited, the licensee shall submit a copy of a certificate of completion showing the licensee’s name, number of continuing education hours earned, sponsor name, and the date on which the program was held or activity completed. One hour of continuing education shall be granted for each 50 to 60 minutes of participation. A maximum of 4 hours of continuing education may be earned for this activity in each renewal period. 20 CSR 2197-2.050 License Renewal and Name and Address Changes PURPOSE: This rule outlines the requirements for the renewal of licensure, specifies continuing education requirements, and name and address changes. (1) Each licensee who holds a license pursuant to sections 324.240 to 324.275, RSMo shall complete, during the two- (2-) year license period prior to renewal, as a condition of the license renewal, twelve (12) clock hours of continuing education relevant to the practice of massage therapy. (A) Continuing education credits earned after the expiration date of a license may apply to the previous renewal cycle if the licensee pays the continuing education late fee as defined in 20 CSR 2197-1.040(3)(F)3. and documents completion of the continuing education as required by 20 CSR 2197- 2.050(1). Payment of the continuing education late fee will entitle a licensee to earn continuing education credits for the previous year. Such hours shall be completed no later than thirty (30) days from the expiration date of the license. (2) Licensees shall maintain evidence of their course participation or course completion for a period of at least four (4) years. Such evidence must be submitted upon request by the board.
